Since forming years and years ago in a dark damp community hall in Tipperary, Autonomous i have been honing their songwriting and performance skills to the point where their music is influenced as much from within the group as it is externally. These five lads fuse sounds together from a breathtakingly broad sonic palette and have produced a range of original tracks over the years that a well stocked duke box would give it’s last dime for!

Autonomous i’s live shows are varied in the extreme and the band seamlessly navigates through rock, funk and dance inspired grooves with infectious confidence and a cheeky grin. Fronted by one of the most powerful set of lungs on the Irish indie rock scene today, Frah Butler, the band have gigged throughout the country in venues such as Whelans and the Sugar Club in Dublin and The Crane Lane in Cork and are being overwhelmed with positive criticism from the likes of Duke Special who described their music as being ‘intriguing and wonderful’.

Mail on Sunday music critic Danny McElhinney has described Autonomous i as being ‘the best undiscovered band in Ireland’ and that ‘it defies logic why Autonomous i is not top of the charts’, it is about time for Autonomous i to be discovered.

Autonomous i are:
Frah Butler – Vocals, Guitar
Daragh Kennedy – Guitar, Vocals
Jamie Kelly – Bass, Vocals
Eddie Dwan – Violin, synth
Adrian Creaney – Drums

Thin Lizzy The Wild One 1995

Thin Lizzy are an Irish hard rock band who formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1969. The two founding members, drummer Brian Downey and bass guitarist/vocalist Phil Lynott met each other while still in school. Lynott, with an engaging and charismatic personality, took up the role of frontman and speaker for the band and led them throughout their recording career of thirteen studio albums. Thin Lizzy are best known for their songs “Whiskey in the Jar”, “Jailbreak” and “The Boys Are Back in Town”, all major international hits still played regularly on hard rock and classic rock radio stations. After Lynott died, various incarnations of the band have emerged over the years culminating in the most stable line-up based around guitarists Scott Gorham and John Sykes, however Sykes left the band in June 2009.

Thin Lizzy’s leader, Lynott was composer or co-composer of almost all their songs. He was one of the few black men to achieve commercial success in hard rock, and was the first black Irishman to do so. As well as being multiracial, the band drew their members not only from both sides of the Irish border but also from both the Catholic and Protestant communities. Their music reflects a wide range of influences, including country music, psychedelic rock, Irish music and traditional Irish folk music, but is generally classified as hard rock or sometimes heavy metal. Rolling Stone magazine describes the band as distinctly hard rock, “far apart from the braying mid-70s metal pack”.

Critic for Allmusic John Dougan has written that “As the band’s creative force, Lynott was a more insightful and intelligent writer than many of his ilk, preferring slice-of-life working-class dramas of love and hate influenced by Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, and virtually all of the Irish literary tradition.” Van Morrison, Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix were major influences during the early days of the band, and later influences included American artists Little Feat and Bob Seger.

Thin Lizzy were ranked #51 on VH1′s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.

1985 commercial for Maxell audio.

Maxell, is a Japanese company which manufactures consumer electronics. The company’s notable products are batteries and electronics — the company’s name is a contraction of “maximum capacity dry cell” — and recording media, including audio cassettes and blank VHS tapes, and recordable optical discs like CD-R/RW and DVD±RW. Additionally, the company sells electronics accessories, like CD and DVD laser cleaners. On March 4, 2008 Maxell announced that they would no longer manufacture their optical media, but would start contracting other companies to manufacture Maxell media.

History

Maxell was formed in 1960 when a dry cell manufacturing plant was created at the company’s Osaka registered headquarters. In 1961, Maxell Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. was created out of the dry battery and magnetic tape divisions of Nitto Electric lndustrial Co., Ltd. (now Nitto Denko Corp.).

Ad Campaign

In the 1980s, Maxell became an icon of pop culture when it produced advertisements popularly known as “Blown Away Guy” for its line of audio cassettes. The original campaign began as a trade ad in 1978 and was made into TV spots in 1979 which ran throughout the 1980s. Steve Steigman was the photographer and Richard Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” was used for music. In the UK the music used was “Night on Bald Mountain” by Modest Mussorgsky.

The ads depict a man sitting low in a (Le Corbusier) high armed chair (on the right side of the screen) in front of, and facing, a pair of JBL L100 speakers (the left side of the screen). His hair and necktie, along with the lampshade to the man’s right and the martini glass on the low table to the man’s left, are being blown back by the tremendous sound from speakers in front of him — supposedly due to the audio accuracy of Maxell’s product. He is shown desperately clinging to the armrests but defiantly looking ahead at the source of the music through sunglasses, though calmly catching his drink before it slides off the end table. Television commercials showed the chair, as well as a drink and nearby lamp, moving back away from the stereo by the strong force of the sound waves. The image became the de facto standard of those who believed their stereo equipment had sufficient power or accuracy to move the mind and the soul. The model for the UK (not US) ad campaign was musician Peter Murphy of the group Bauhaus. The model for the US campaign, however, was the makeup artist hired for the shoot by photographer Steve Steigman. The impact of the advertising campaign on popular culture still resonates today: “Blown Away Guy” was parodied on the animated television show “Family Guy” in the episode “Model Misbehavior”. This is only the most recent in countless parodies over the years, which includes a parody in the John Ritter film Stay Tuned, (which featured a character’s head being blown off by a “Max-Hell” tape).

On December 12, 2005, Maxell decided to bring “Blown Away Guy” back due to its popularity. As Maxell now makes blank DVDs and CDs, headphones and speakers in addition to mainstays such as blank audio and video tape, the ads have been updated with photos of iPods and accessories underneath the image. “Get blown away” is the headline while copy urges consumers to use Maxell accessories to “make your small iPod sound like a huge audio system.”

The music video for P. Diddy’s song ‘Tell Me’, is somewhat reminiscent of the “Blown Away Guy” ad.

Woolworth promo for the New kids on the Block ‘Hanging Tough’ album.

New Kids on the Block (also known as NKOTB) is an American pop group that enjoyed success in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a boy band which went on to sell 80 million records world-wide. Assembled in Boston in 1984 by producer Maurice Starr, the members consist of brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood. They won two American Music Awards in 1990 for Favorite Pop/Rock Band, Duo, or Group and Favorite Pop/Rock Album.

After having disbanded in 1994, several attempts were made to get the group back together, all of them unsuccessful. They reunited in 2008 and took on a new style, released a new album, and embarked on a concert tour in the fall. The album, entitled The Block was released on September 2, 2008.

1984-1985: Early years
In the early 1980s, Maurice Starr discovered R&B/Pop quintet (later sextet) New Edition and guided their early success. After breaking ties with them, Starr and his business partner, Mary Alford, sought to create a white counterpart act. Auditions were held around Boston, at which some five hundred teenaged boys auditioned. Among them was 15-year-old Donnie Wahlberg, who immediately impressed Starr and Alford by his rapping skills, dancing ability and showmanship, becoming the group’s first member. Wahlberg assisted in helping to recruit other members. Among them were his younger brother Mark, and his best friend Danny Wood. He also coaxed one-time schoolmate Jordan Knight, who sang an exceptional falsetto, into auditioning as well. Upon Knight’s passing the audition, his older brother Jonathan (also possessing a strong singing voice) was accepted into the group as well

As the group began to take shape, Mark became disillusioned with its bubble gum direction, and opted to quit. Another one of Donnie’s neighborhood friends, Jaime Kelley, took his place. Kelley, though, would eventually be dismissed for lack of concentration and discipline. Seeking a Michael Jackson-esque singer to sing the high solos, Starr replaced him with 11-year-old Joey McIntyre—whom the other guys initially resented for being the one to replace their friend. With the final line-up in place Starr rehearsed the boys diligently, after school and on weekends, and eventually secured the group (which was being called Nynuk) a recording contract at Columbia Records. The label, however, demanded Starr change the name of the group. Subsequently they settled on New Kids on the Block, after a rap song that Donnie had written and arranged for their first album.
