History

The magazine was launched in 1955, but became a national magazine only in 1968. Prior to 1968, several of the regional ITV companies – Westward Television, Scottish Television, Tyne Tees Television, Ulster Television, TWW and Teledu Cymru (and briefly WWN) – produced their own listings magazines. The Midlands originally had their own edition of TVTimes listing ATV and ABC programmes, but a separate listings magazine in the Midlands called TV World existed from 1964-68 before TVTimes went national. Until television listings were deregulated in 1991 the TVTimes was the only place where complete weekly listings of ITV programmes could be published.

Channel Television continued to publish its own listings magazine until 1991 (it was feared that the company might go under without the revenue from its own magazine).

70′s uk advert for Look In Magazine. Look-in was a long running childrens magazine centred around ITVs television programmes in the UK, and subtitled The Junior TV Times. It ran from 9 January 1971 to 12 March 1994. Briefly, in 1985, a BBC-based rival appeared called BEEB, and later in 1989, Fast Forward, which went on to outsell Look-in. Look-in had interviews, crosswords and competitions, and it had pictures and pin-ups of TV stars and pop idols of the time. Its main feature however was the many comic strips of the favourite childrens television programmes. These included Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Follyfoot, The Tomorrow People, The Six Million Dollar Man, Charlies Angels, Worzel Gummidge, Knight Rider, The A-Team and Robin of Sherwood.

EastEnders was launched at a critical moment in the BBC’s history and was intended to demonstrate the BBC’s ability to produce popular programming. It started airing on the night after a major identity change for the channel, with the show representing the “new face” of the BBC. Critics first derided the new offering, as it was clear that the BBC wished to bridge the gap between the network and its competitor, ITV. One news source went as far as to accuse the channel of only having the courage to air the soap after Patricia Phoenix (Elsie Tanner) left Coronation Street.

The BBC brass was vindicated, however, when EastEnders became wildly popular and displaced Coronation Street from the top of the ratings for the rest of the 1980s, much of the 1990′s, and to some extent in the 2000′s.
