In the United Kingdom in the 1930s, most of the herring catch was pickled and exported to other Northern European countries. In an attempt to make herring more appealing on the home market, companies tried to present it in a new way, creating herring fish fingers called “herring savouries” and were tested on the market against a bland control product of cod sticks, sold as “fish fingers.” Shoppers in Southampton and South Wales, where the test was conducted, confounded expectations by showing an overwhelming preference for the cod. Cod fish fingers were first produced in Great Yarmouth,[1] and introduced in Britain on 26 September 1955.
In 1953, the American company Gorton-Pew Fisheries, now known as Gorton’s, was the first company to introduce a frozen ready-to-cook fish finger, named Gorton’s Fish Sticks, which won the Parents Magazine Seal of Approval.

Potato waffles are a potato based savoury food in a waffle like lattice shape. They are common in the UK and Ireland and are also available in some other countries.
They are made of reconstituted potato, oil, and seasonings. They may be baked, grilled, or fried, and are used as a side dish, often together with sausages or bacon, or as a snack food. They are sold frozen and produced by various frozen food companies including Birds Eye and McCain Foods. Contrary to popular belief, Potato Waffle’s are not actual waffle products.

Crispy Pancakes is the name of a brand of frozen savoury pancakes coated with breadcrumbs and contain one of three fillings:
- Minced beef
- Three cheeses
- Chicken, bacon and sweetcorn
Previously they were also available in chicken curry flavour.
Crispy Pancakes are made by the Swedish food company Findus. Crispy pancakes are sold in the United Kingdom and Italy. In Italy, they are known as Sofficini.
Approximately 450,000 Crispy Pancakes were destroyed in a fire at Findus’ plant in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK on 6 January 2009.

Birds Eye is considered to be one of the founders of the modern frozen food industry and is credited with inventing a fast freezing process that preserves the quality of food. Founded by General Foods, which in 1929 bought the rights to use a fast-freezing process patented by Clarence Birdseye.
