1988 commercial for Impulse “On Fire”.

Impulse is a bodyspray manufactured by FabergĂ© which was part of Unilever, an Anglo-Dutch company based in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and London, United Kingdom. Introduced as a ‘perfume deodorant’ in South Africa in 1972, Impulse was launched in the UK in 1979, including the butterfly design and the slogan “Men can’t help acting on Impulse.” (more…)

1980 ad for BRUT, the mens aftershave. “Nothing Beats It”

Brut is the brand name for a line of men’s grooming and fragrance products first launched in 1964 and currently ranked among the top 3 men’s fragrances sold in mass. Original Brut, which now includes aftershave balms and deodorant, was first introduced by FabergĂ©. Packaged in a green glass bottle with a silver-coloured medallion, it was viewed as a prestige product, and is still sold in France as such.

In 1968 a budget range was marketed as Brut 33 because it contained 33% of the fragrance of the original product[2] and was packaged in cheaper plastic bottles. (more…)

Max Factor

1982 Le Jardin de Max Factor.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the “golden years” of Hollywood, Max Factor became intimately associated with the world of movie make-up. He created the lip gloss for the movies in 1914, and coined the term “makeup”, based on the verb, “to make up” (one’s face).

Jean Harlow, Claudette Colbert, Bette Davis, Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Judy Garland, and virtually all of the major movie actresses were regular customers of the Max Factor beauty salon, located near Hollywood Boulevard. Max Factor’s name appeared on many movie credits, and Factor himself appeared in some cameos. (more…)
